Chaffin Tops NCRA Regulars at Creek County Speedway

Story by John Rittenoure

KELLYVILLE, Okla. (June 26, 2010) - Visiting the winners circle is not a new thing to Craig Chaffin, but winning $1,000 just might be. That is what Chaffin earned for his victory in the O'Reilly National Championship Racing Association Modified South Series feature Saturday at Creek County Speedway.

A total of 29 modifieds were on hand for the first ever NCRA modified show at the Kellyville track and Chaffin made the best of it leading all 30-laps for his first NCRA career victory.

Chaffin jumped into the early lead from his front row starting position and was chased by Randy Bailey for two laps. Alan Sharpensteen then moved into second but could not get close enough to challenge. NCRA regular Chad Davis made a late charge passing Sharpensteen for second on lap 27. However Sharpensteen passed Davis back on lap 29 and held on to finish second. Davis settled for third while Kevin Lacy and Bailey rounded out the top five.

Jerry Hoffman, driving his first race at Creek County this season, came from near the rear of the field to walk away with the mini stock feature. It only took Hoffman five laps to work his way up behind leader Danny Ray and take away the lead. Hoffman quickly opened up a half-lap lead and threaded his way through lapped traffic to easily win over Ray. Jonathan Fisher finished in third.

Steve Freeman passed Robert Bright on lap 15 to win his fifth factory stock main event. Bright settled for second after leading midway through the race.

James Esmond won for the second time in the super stock division. Esmond led from the start but was chased by Stacy Lee in the early going. Troy Minton drove into second after a lap eight restart but could not hold off Nathan Campbell who was charging his way toward the front from his rear starting position. Campbell found his way into second on lap 17 but Esmond held his position for the victory. Campbell was second.

All six regular classes will resume points racing next Saturday at 7 p.m. Gates open at 4.
